Electomotive Contactless Ordering System

We had a simple problem. Finding a waiter in a crowded restaurant. Our solution to this problem was to use a contactless Menu system that was simple enough to be understood by everyone, did not need any App downloads or logins and would be a tool instead of a hassle.

While developing the product there was the Covid-19 hit and there was a huge need in the market. Now the problem was not just about finding a waiter, it was about the Contactless part. Restaurants were closed and we had to come up with an outdoor solution.

Introducing the “Electomotive Infinity". This was the prototype we started with. A large QR code that could be read from a distance with the LOGO and Instructions at the bottom. To pitch the idea to the Customers we had a miniature version of this.

After a long testing process with wizard of oz testing with consumers, restaurant owners and friends. We were able to use the data to come up with with an efficient solution to our problem. The Light-up Contactless ordering board.

An easy to read “Drive By" ordering system that would enable minimal interaction with people and a fast ordering system.

The System also included a Credit Card payment system backed by “Safepay" which was smooth and easy to use by the customers.

The App interface was simple:

Scan the QR with your iPhone camera or Google Lens.

Place your order. Make the payment or select “Cash on Delivery" and Relax.

After Phase 1 of the Rollout. The restaurants were starting to open so we needed an indoor solution:

Prototyping problem. The Table QR needed to be Easy to Read, with as few words as possible. Clear instructions, and neutral colours so we can use economies of scale to cut down printing cost.

Prototyping:

The prototyping stage for this version was longer and tedious. There were a lot of factor involved: What was the perfect size of the QR? How many words to be used on the QR tag? Logo of the restaurant to be added or not? How to add instructions in a minimal style?

We used focus group and rapid prototyping to tackle these problems and also did a Beta rollout to one of our partner restaurants to get feedback on our design. The research had paid-off and we were able to make the final design ready just with some minor tweaks to the Beta version.

Introducing the “Electomotive Infinity Tags"

Simple Design. Minimal Instructions. Easy to Read.

This was a huge success in the market and we got tonnes of orders for this design. The App interface was very easy to use and the customers loved that.
